The useful natural gas vs propane generator decision is not a generic list of fuel advantages. It is a property-specific feasibility review. Natural gas can avoid an onsite refill plan when service exists and can support the proposed equipment, but a meter and pipe near the house do not prove adequate pressure or flow. Fuel design begins with an electrical and equipment record, not a fuel preference. That order matters for three reasons:
- A model family can have different ratings or requirements on natural gas and propane.

Confirm service at the actual property
A gas main on a nearby street does not establish that service is available to a particular parcel, that a new service will be offered, or that its scope and timing fit the project. An existing account confirms some service, not capacity for a new generator.
Identify the natural-gas provider from the account or address-specific provider confirmation. Dominion Energy’s South Carolina start-service page, for example, directs customers to check gas availability for their area. That does not prove Dominion serves a given reader or will approve a generator-related change.
The project record should state:
- provider and account/service address;
- existing meter and regulator identifiers available to the owner;
- whether the provider requires an application, load data, site visit, or contractor request;
- who submits the generator and total connected-load information;
- who receives and incorporates provider requirements;
- what provider-side or customer-side work remains unresolved; and
- the alternative if service or the requested capacity is not available.
Do not promise a provider response, meter change, service extension, cost, schedule, pressure, or outage performance before written confirmation.
Calculate the complete gas load
The generator is usually not the only natural-gas appliance. Furnaces, water heaters, ranges, dryers, fireplaces, pool heaters, outdoor appliances, and other equipment can request fuel while the generator operates. - Could gates, evacuation, fallen trees, storm debris, standing water, soft ground, or construction prevent access?
- Does the supplier impose delivery conditions or minimums that must be understood?
- Are other propane appliances drawing from the same supply during the outage?
- What loads will be reduced if resupply is delayed?
- What independent plan protects health-critical needs?

Does your property actually have the gas supply the generator needs?

Depending on the approved system, the record may include:

An either-fuel comparison may remain open when both complete scopes are feasible. Compare exact fuel-specific equipment ratings, property work, responsibilities, outage logistics, commissioning, maintenance, and owner obligations—not marketing labels.
A revised or deferred project may be appropriate when service capacity, tank/supplier rights, site/flood constraints, delivery access, qualified trade scope, or approvals remain unresolved. The load plan may also need revision if neither feasible fuel path supports the requested generator design.
