A standby generator runs indefinitely on fuel and handles large loads such as central air, which a typical home battery cannot sustain for long. A battery is silent, needs no fuel delivery, and pairs with solar to earn its keep between outages. The honest note on incentives
Standby generators generally don’t carry a solar tax credit. If resilience plus energy savings is the goal, pairing solar and a battery may open South Carolina’s 25% state tax credit (up to $3,500/year, carried forward up to 10 years) and property- and sales-tax exemptions, the federal residential solar credit ended in 2025, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Neither is automatically better, it depends on your outage risk, loads, and budget. A generator runs as long as it has fuel; a battery is silent and fuel-free but has finite capacity. Many homes benefit from both. We’ll lay out the honest trade-off for your home in a free assessment.
Natural gas or propane, which is right for my home?
It depends on what’s already at your property. Natural gas draws from your utility line with no tank to refill; propane needs an on-site tank but works where there’s no gas line. We confirm what’s available and size the fuel supply during the assessment.
How does an automatic transfer switch work?
It continuously monitors utility power. When the grid drops, it safely disconnects your home from the grid and signals the generator to start, usually within seconds, then switches back automatically when power returns.
What size generator do I need?
That depends on which circuits you want to keep running, whole-home versus essentials like HVAC, fridge, and well pump. We calculate your actual load rather than guess, so you don’t overpay for capacity you won’t use.
Do I still need a generator if I already have a solar battery?
