Commercial backup power in Columbia
Standby generators, load bank testing and backup power maintenance for retail centres, industrial plants and city facilities across Richland County and the Midlands. We service equipment we did not install.
What we do for commercial sites
Standby generator installation
Sizing starts from the loads you actually need to keep running, not from the building's total connected load. On most commercial sites those are different numbers, and the gap between them is the difference between a sensible set and an oversized one. The transfer switch and the order in which circuits come back matter as much as the generator itself.
Load bank testing
A standby set that only ever idles is a set nobody has proved. Load bank testing applies a real electrical load so the generator runs at a realistic percentage of its rating, which both demonstrates capacity and clears the wet stacking that light-load running causes in diesel units. We test on site and give you the results in writing.
Maintenance and service contracts
Scheduled inspection, oil and filter service, battery and coolant checks, transfer switch exercise, and fault log review. Retail centres and industrial plants typically want this on a fixed cycle so it stops being something that gets remembered after an outage rather than before one.
Repair on equipment somebody else installed
Most of the commercial backup power work in Columbia is on equipment supplied by a contractor who is no longer involved. That is normal and it does not limit what we can do. We will also tell you when a unit has reached the point where continued repair costs more than replacement.
The buildings this usually applies to
- Retail centres. Refrigeration, tills and lighting decide how much of the centre stays trading. The question is usually which tenants get covered, which is a distribution decision before it is a generator decision.
- Industrial and plant sites. Process loads, motor starting and three-phase distribution. Motor inrush is the figure that most often makes a generator that looked adequate on paper inadequate in practice.
- City and public facilities. Often carry a testing obligation of their own, which is where load bank testing stops being optional.
- Offices and mixed-use. Usually a smaller set covering life safety, lifts, servers and enough lighting and power to keep working.
Where solar and storage fit, and where they do not
A battery is good at the first few seconds and the first few hours. It covers the transfer gap, protects sensitive equipment and shaves demand charges on an ordinary day. It is not a multi-day outage solution at commercial load, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling rather than sizing.
A generator is the opposite: it will run as long as it has fuel, and it does nothing for you on the 360 days a year when the power stays on. Plenty of Columbia sites justify both, and the honest answer depends on your load profile and what an hour of downtime actually costs you.
If solar is part of the conversation, our commercial solar page for Columbia covers that side, and the Dominion Energy SC guide explains how exported power is credited here, which changes the economics.

Tell us about the building and we will scope it
We read your bill, confirm your Dominion Energy South Carolina export terms, and tell you what your roof in Richland County will actually carry. If solar does not make sense at your address, we will say so, and that answer is free too.
- We confirm whether Dominion Energy South Carolina or Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative and Fairfield Electric Cooperative serve addresses around the metro serves your meter before we quote anything
- Permitting runs through A building permit and a separate electrical permit for a rooftop system, and we handle it
- A wide mix: historic districts with real design controls near the city core, and newer suburban HOAs further out.

Commercial backup power FAQ
What facilities managers ask us first
Do you service commercial generators you did not install?
Yes. Most commercial backup power work in Columbia is on equipment somebody else installed, often years ago. We inspect, service and repair regardless of who supplied it, and we will tell you plainly when a unit is past the point where repair makes financial sense.
What is load bank testing and does my building need it?
A load bank applies an artificial electrical load so a standby generator runs at a realistic percentage of its rating rather than idling. It proves the set can actually carry the building, and it burns off the wet stacking that light-load running causes in diesel units. Whether your building needs it depends on the equipment, its duty and any code or insurance requirement that applies to your facility, which we confirm on site.
How is a commercial job different from a residential one?
Three ways. The transfer switch and distribution design is larger and usually phased, so which circuits come back and in what order has to be decided deliberately. The permit route involves commercial plan review rather than a residential electrical permit. And the work usually has to happen without shutting the business, which shapes the schedule more than the equipment does.
Can solar and battery storage back up a commercial building?
Partly, and it depends on the load. Battery storage covers short outages and protects sensitive equipment during the transfer. A generator covers a multi-day outage at full building load. Many Columbia sites end up with both, because they solve different problems, and we will say which one your load profile actually justifies.
Which areas around Columbia do you cover?
We work across Richland County and the surrounding Midlands from our Daniel Island office in the Charleston metro. Give us the address and we will confirm coverage the same day.
What does a commercial backup power assessment involve?
We look at the existing equipment and its service history, the loads you need to keep running, the transfer arrangement, and the permit and inspection route for your building. You get the findings and a scope in writing. No figure is quoted before the site visit, because commercial distribution varies too much to estimate honestly from a description.
Free, no-pressure assessment
Want the existing equipment assessed before the next outage?
We will look at what is installed, what it is expected to carry, and whether it can. Findings and scope in writing.
