Can an HOA stop me installing solar in South Carolina?
In most cases it cannot prohibit solar outright, though it can apply architectural review, and the practical outcome depends on how a design is presented. We prepare the review packet as part of every installation and design for approval rather than for an appeal, because a layout that assumes no review can come back materially smaller after one committee meeting. Requirements differ by community, so we confirm what applies to your address before designing.
The real problem
The HOA is why a lot of Lowcountry homeowners never go solar
Communities like Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Bluffton, and Hilton Head have active architectural-review committees, and the paperwork, covenants, and placement rules stop people before they start. The fear of a rejection, or a fight over a street-facing roof, is enough to make homeowners give up.
So we take it off your plate entirely. We read your covenants, design for approval, prepare the full architectural-review packet, and represent the request directly to your HOA. You barely have to lift a finger.
We handle everything
From covenants to approval, the HOA process, handled
- 01
Review your covenants
We pull your HOA’s CC&Rs and architectural guidelines and identify exactly what they require for solar, placement, submission format, and any aesthetic rules, before we design anything.
- 02
Prepare the packet
We assemble the full architectural-review submission for you: system design, panel layout, equipment specs, and the documentation your committee expects, built to approve.
- 03
Submit & liaise with the HOA
We file the request and act as the point of contact with your architectural-review committee, answering their questions and handling revisions directly, so you’re not stuck in the middle.
- 04
Approval & install
Once approved, we finalize permitting and utility interconnection and schedule your installation, one team from HOA packet to switched-on.

What HOA coordination involves, and what it costs
HOA coordination is part of your solar project scope. Here’s how it works, the SC law context, and how incentives apply.
What HOA coordination costs
HOA coordination is handled as part of your solar project scope, it’s the paperwork and liaison work we take on so you don’t have to. Timelines vary by HOA; we set honest expectations up front.
SC Solar Rights context
South Carolina’s Solar Rights Act limits an HOA’s ability to prohibit solar outright, though committees can still set reasonable rules on placement and appearance. We design within those rules to give your request the strongest, cleanest path to approval. (This is general information, not legal advice.)
2026 solar incentives
The solar project itself may count toward South Carolina’s 25% state tax credit (up to $3,500/year, carried forward up to 10 years) plus property- and sales-tax exemptions. The federal residential solar credit ended in 2025, we won’t pretend otherwise. A tax professional can confirm eligibility. See financing & incentives →

HOA coordination FAQ
The questions we hear on almost every call
Can my HOA legally stop me from installing solar in South Carolina?
South Carolina’s Solar Rights Act limits an HOA’s ability to prohibit solar outright, but committees can set reasonable rules on placement and appearance. We design within those rules and handle the approval request for you. (This is general information, not legal advice.)
Who prepares the HOA architectural-review packet?
We do. We assemble the full submission, system design, panel layout, equipment specs, and required documentation, and file it with your architectural-review committee, so you don’t have to navigate it alone.
What if my panels would face the street?
Where the roof layout allows, we place panels on the rear or side of the home to keep the street view clean and HOA-friendly. When street-facing placement is unavoidable, we present it in the packet the way your committee expects. We design for approval.
How long does HOA approval take?
It varies by HOA, some committees turn around in a couple of weeks, others meet monthly. We set honest expectations for your specific community and handle the back-and-forth so the process keeps moving.
Do you handle HOA approval on Daniel Island and other Lowcountry communities?
Yes. We’re based on Daniel Island and coordinate regularly with architectural-review committees across Mount Pleasant, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Beaufort. Send us your HOA name and we’ll map the path.
