Do I need a new roof before installing solar?
Not always, and roof age alone is the wrong test. What matters is the remaining service life of the covering, the condition of the decking and flashing, and whether the array would need removing and resetting within the system's life. Where a roof has under about a decade left, doing the roof first or both together is usually cheaper than paying for a removal and reset later. We assess the roof before quoting the array rather than after.

Roof size, material, pitch and complexity, plus whether it needs replacement or just repair before solar. We only recommend roof work the roof actually needs.
2026 incentives in South Carolina
The solar portion of the project may count toward South Carolina’s 25% state tax credit (up to $3,500/year, carried forward up to 10 years), plus property- and sales-tax exemptions. Why roof and array should be one decision
An array has a service life measured in decades. A roof has a service life measured in years remaining. When those two numbers do not line up, someone pays to remove the array, re-roof, and reinstall it, and that cost is entirely avoidable by sequencing the work correctly at the start.
This is the single most common expensive mistake in residential solar, and it happens because the roof question is outside the scope of a solar quote. An installer whose business is panels has no particular reason to raise it, and a homeowner has no particular reason to think of it.
We raise it because the alternative is worse. If your roof has only a few years left, the honest recommendation is to re-roof first even though it delays our work and occasionally means you spend money with a roofer before spending any with us.

Every mounting point is a hole in your roof. Done correctly, with the right flashing and sealing detail for your roof type, it is a non-issue for the life of the roof. Done poorly, it is a leak that appears years later in a place that does not obviously correspond to the panel above it.

Once the modules are installed you cannot inspect this work, which makes it exactly the kind of thing that gets rushed by a crew paid per installation. Roof type governs the detail. Asphalt shingle, metal and tile each require different approaches, and tile in particular is unforgiving of a crew that has mostly worked on shingle. It is fair to ask an installer how many roofs of your specific type they have done.

Does installing solar void my roof warranty?
It can when roof and solar are done by different companies. Because we do both in-house, every penetration is sealed and warrantied by us, including a lifetime roof-penetration warranty, so coverage stays clear and single-source.
Can one company handle both the roof and the solar?
Yes, that’s the point of this service. One local team assesses the roof, replaces or repairs it if needed, and installs the solar, so there’s a single accountable party for the whole system.
What happens if a roof penetration leaks after install?
