Why storage does or does not fit in Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head is a barrier island under mandatory evacuation in a serious storm, and often restored late. Backup here is about resilience rather than convenience, and the realistic design case is a property that has been without power for days, possibly while unoccupied, with the owner returning across a bridge that may have been closed. That is a different problem from a suburban outage and it needs sizing accordingly.

Pairing storage with solar is what makes an extended outage survivable at a sensible battery size, because the array recharges the battery each day rather than the battery having to carry the whole event alone. Where the island's tree canopy limits the array, that daily recharge is limited too, which is an honest constraint on how much resilience a given property can actually achieve.

For rental properties the calculation is commercial. An outage during a booked week is lost revenue and a guest-experience problem, which changes the justification from comfort to income protection. Community architectural-review boards also have views on visible external equipment, and salt exposure dictates enclosure specification, so placement here is usually the binding constraint rather than capacity.

The maths changed

Storing a kilowatt-hour now beats exporting one

Until the end of 2025, Dominion Energy South Carolina credited exported solar close to one-for-one. Sending surplus power to the grid was almost as good as using it, so a battery in Hilton Head Island was mostly about riding out storm-season outages.

That ended on December 31, 2025. Under Solar Choice, exports credit at roughly 2.8–4.1¢ per kWh on a time-of-use basis, with a rider of about $14 a month and a November true-up at avoided cost. You still buy power at about 14.4¢ per kWh. The gap between those two numbers is the entire case for storage.

A battery closes that gap. Instead of exporting afternoon surplus for a few cents and buying evening power back at full retail, you store the surplus and spend it yourself. For a household that is out during the day and home in the evening, this is the difference between a system that barely moves the bill and one that does what you expected.
