What drives price in Aiken

Two identical roofs on two neighbouring streets can carry genuinely different payback, and no honest price can be quoted before that is settled.
The second driver is the tree canopy. The Winter Colony streets and the blocks around Hitchcock Woods carry mature hardwood that shades roof planes for real parts of the day. Shade like that costs real production. The right answer is usually a smaller, better-placed array rather than the large system a national calculator will suggest. We would rather size to what your roof actually receives than sell you capacity the canopy will absorb.
Third, jurisdiction changes the pre-construction cost. Inside the city of Aiken a property in the Historic Overlay or Old Aiken Overlay needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Design Review Board before panels go anywhere visible. Inside North Augusta it is that city’s process, and in the unincorporated county it is Aiken County Planning & Development. About these rates in Aiken
The table above models a Dominion Energy South Carolina meter. If your address is served by Aiken Electric Cooperative the arithmetic changes, and not in a small way. South Carolina’s net energy metering chapter governs “electrical utilities” and expressly exempts any serving fewer than one hundred thousand customer accounts (S.C. Code §58-40-10(D)). Electric cooperatives sit outside that definition altogether: under the 2014 act each cooperative board adopts its own net energy metering policy and reports it to the Office of Regulatory Staff. Aiken Electric therefore sets its own export credit under its distributed-generation rider, at what it calls the Value of Renewable Generation, rather than at retail. We will not print a co-op export figure we have not read off the current rate schedule, so on a cooperative address we confirm the credit in writing before we model anything. Every national page that prices Aiken assumes one utility serves the whole city. That is the single most common error in this market.

The mechanic is simple. Power you consume the moment you generate it offsets electricity you would have bought at about 14.4¢ per kWh. Power you export earns only roughly 2.8–4.1¢ per kWh, and Solar Choice also carries a rider of about $14 a month plus a true-up in November that settles leftover credits at an avoided-cost rate. Daytime use is what pays here.
That also explains why payback in Aiken is longer now than the 13-year figures still published on aggregator sites. Those figures were calculated when a 30% federal credit existed and when exports earned retail rates. Both of those changed. We would rather show you the current number than a flattering old one.
