Two things happened in 2026, and both hurt
Dominion Energy Virginia closed one-for-one net metering to new residential systems. Under net energy metering under §56-594, exported power now credits at credited one-for-one at retail against your own annual usage instead of at the retail rate, with a rider of about $1 a month for customers connecting under NEM 2.0 and a November true-up. The federal 30% credit expired at the same time, for systems placed in service on or after January 1, 2026, and South Carolina's capped 25% credit does not fill the hole.
