The Florence answer turns almost entirely on one number: Duke Energy Progress credits exported power at roughly 2.6 to 4 cents per kilowatt-hour. That is low enough that a system sized to export is not worth building. A system sized to your own daytime consumption, offsetting power at your full retail rate, is a different proposition entirely, and it is the only version of this project we would recommend here.
That makes your usage pattern more decisive than your roof. A household that is out all day and uses power in the evening will export cheaply and buy back dear, and for that household the honest answer is often no, or not without storage. A household with someone home, a home business, or heavy afternoon cooling through a Pee Dee summer is in a materially better position on the same roof.
The physical conditions are on your side, which is why the question is worth asking properly rather than dismissing. Lots are generously sized with pines around the house rather than over it, so full-day shading is less common here than in the coastal markets, and there are few architectural-review controls on panel visibility. Where a Florence roof is clear, the design can follow the sun without argument.

Two things happened in 2026, and both hurt
Duke Energy Progress closed one-for-one net metering to new residential systems. Under Duke's current residential solar rate structure, exported power now credits at roughly 2.6–4¢ per kWh instead of at the retail rate. The federal 30% credit expired at the same time, for systems placed in service on or after January 1, 2026, and South Carolina's capped 25% credit does not fill the hole. Both changes push the same way, so payback in Florence is longer than the figures still sitting on national comparison sites, which were calculated under the old rules.
None of that means solar stopped working here. It means the margin for error narrowed, and right-sizing and self-consumption now matter far more than they did. A well-designed system for the right home still makes sense. An oversized one sold on old assumptions does not.

- Your roof needs replacing within about five years.
- Your power bill is under roughly $90 a month.
- Pines shade your best roof planes and you have no open ground for a ground-mount alternative.
- You are likely to move within five years.
- You have little or no South Carolina tax liability, so the 25% state credit cannot be fully used. It is non-refundable and capped annually.
- You are being sold on a 30% federal credit. That quote is wrong, and it is a reason to walk away from that company rather than from solar.
